Socket and Switch Installation

New sockets and switches should be planned around how the space will be used, the existing circuit, furniture positions, finishes and product compatibility. Provide the number and approximate locations required, along with photographs or drawings, so the work can be scoped without relying on assumptions.

Adding to a circuit

What decides whether a circuit can take more

Adding a socket is usually an alteration to an existing ring or radial circuit. It is not notifiable under Part P in England outside a special location, but it still has to comply with BS 7671 and be certified, and the existing circuit has to be capable of taking the addition.

That is the part people skip. A circuit already at capacity, or one with a fault that has not shown itself yet, does not become safe because another outlet is added to it. Testing before extending is what separates a compliant addition from an accumulating problem.

Spurs

On a ring final circuit, an unfused spur may feed one single or one double socket. A fused connection unit can feed more, because its own 13A fuse protects what follows, which is why boilers, extractor fans and towel rails are commonly fed this way.

Position and height

In new dwellings and some extension work, Part M expects switches and sockets roughly between 450mm and 1200mm above floor level. Beyond regulation, position them for how the room is actually used.

Reliance on extension leads

Permanently running heaters, tumble dryers or kitchen appliances through extension leads is a sign the room needs fixed sockets rather than more adaptors.

USB outlets

Convenient, but the USB module is electronics and will fail long before the socket does. Older USB-A modules charge modern devices slowly, so look for meaningful USB-C output.
