Indoor Lighting Installation

A useful indoor lighting plan considers how each room is used, switching positions, colour temperature, controls, maintenance and the condition of the existing installation. Share drawings, fitting schedules or photographs when available so the enquiry can be understood accurately.

Designing the lighting

Why lighting is a design decision before it is an electrical one

Evenly spaced ceiling lights produce flat, unflattering light and are the most common mistake in domestic lighting. Rooms that work well usually layer a general source with task lighting where things actually happen and accent lighting for atmosphere, with the switching arranged so the layers can be used separately.

The electrical constraints follow from that design. Circuit capacity, dimmer compatibility, whether a neutral is available at the switch, and whether the ceiling can be accessed from above all determine what is achievable — and all are far cheaper to resolve on a drawing than in finished plaster.

LEDs and dimmers

Most older dimmers are leading edge, designed for filament lamps. LEDs generally need a trailing edge dimmer, and the dimmer minimum load must be met — five 5W lamps may total less than it needs to work. Mixing LED brands on one circuit causes uneven dimming.

Downlights

They must be fire rated where they penetrate a fire-resisting ceiling, need clearance from loft insulation unless designed to be covered, and must avoid joists and pipework. Most are now sealed integrated units, replaced whole when the LED fails.

Circuits without an earth

Lighting circuits installed before the mid-1960s frequently have no circuit protective conductor, which limits you to all-insulated fittings and switches. It is the usual reason a lighting rewire becomes necessary.

Switching

Two-way and intermediate switching needs the right cabling between switch positions. Adding a second switch point to an existing single switch normally means new cable, not just a new plate.
