Neutral at the switch
Many smart switches need a permanent neutral as well as the switched line. Older installations often lack it. Where it is missing, the options are a different switch type, a smart lamp approach, or running the conductor.
Smart lighting works best when the required experience is defined before selecting products. Consider physical controls, app access, household users, scenes, compatibility, internet dependence and what should happen if a device or service is unavailable.

The first question is not which brand but which approach: smart lamps, or smart switches. Smart lamps need no wiring change but only work while the wall switch stays on, which is a poor fit for how households actually behave. Smart switches keep normal wall control and are generally the better answer — but many require a neutral conductor at the switch position.
Older lighting wiring frequently does not run a neutral to the switch. Establishing that before first fix costs nothing; discovering it afterwards means opening walls. On a renovation this is the single most valuable decision to take early.

A system should still light the room when the network, the hub or the app is unavailable. Retaining conventional local control is worth specifying deliberately.
