Lighting circuits are the usual candidate. Pre-1966 wiring commonly has no earth at the switch or ceiling rose, which rules out metal fittings and downlights until the circuit is replaced.
Partial rewiring focuses on a defined area or set of circuits, but it still needs to be considered in the context of the existing installation. Explain what is changing, why the work is required and whether later renovation phases are planned so boundaries and dependencies can be identified.

A partial rewire replaces the circuits that have reached the end of their life while leaving those that test well in service. It is the right answer more often than people expect, because deterioration in a house is rarely uniform — lighting circuits are frequently the oldest surviving part while socket circuits have been replaced at some point.
The decision needs test results rather than a visual impression. Insulation resistance readings, the presence of a circuit protective conductor, and the condition of the earthing arrangement establish which circuits are serviceable. Without that, a partial rewire risks leaving a defective circuit connected to a new board.

Replacing circuits one storey at a time limits disruption and can be phased around occupation, though it needs the board arrangement planned so the work joins up.
These are often rewired as part of a refit regardless of the rest of the house, because the loads and the special location requirements have changed since the original installation.
New circuits are notifiable under Part P and should be certified with an Electrical Installation Certificate. Alterations to existing circuits are covered by a Minor Works Certificate.
